What you should buy-8/7/13

YIKES!!! Some real slim pickens this week. But, as always, there's a couple of really GREAT books coming out. Let's get to it:

Lords of Mars #1: One of the strangest, yet most awesome crossovers in the history of crossovers!!! It's John Carter meets TARZAN!!!! Yeah, you heard me. Written by Arvid Nelson with art by Roberto Castro!

All New X-Men #15: JEAN!!! WTF?!?!?!?!?!?! Cyclops gets his heart broken, and I couldn't be happier. I've always hated him. Buy why is Jean kissing someone else? This book is always awesome!

Trinity of Sin: Phantom Stranger #11: The Trinity War continues!!! Phantom Stranger leads a strange group of JLAers to grab the soul of a murdered JLA member!!! I've been really loving this crossover!

Robocop: The Last Stand #1: IT'S ROBOCOP!! Detroit is in shambles(kinda like in real life), and the city's only hope? Yeah, you know who it is. Written by Steven Grant from a story by Frank Miller!!

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century #1: IT'S FINALLY HERE!!!!! The ORIGINAL, FIRST and BEST sci-fi here has come BACK to comics!!!!! And guess who's bringing him back? None other than comics legend HOWARD CHAYKIN!!! I know, right?!?!?!?!

What you should buy...6/5/13

A decent sized week this week, a couple of real stand out books. Let's get to it!

Daredevil: Dark Nights #1: By LEE WEEKS!!!! Glad to see him doing a Daredevil story again, and it's pretty awesome!

Earth 2 #13: Captain Steel!!!!!

Miss Fury #3: A really fun take on this classic pulp heroin.

Green Arrow #21: This new creative team is kicking ass big time!!

Herobear and the Kid Special: I love Mike Kunkel's art so much and I loved this book when it was coming out before. Looking very forward to reading this.

All New X-Men #12: The X-Men vs The Avengers!!!!...wait a minute. Didn't we just read that?

Green Lantern #21: New creative team!!

The Lone Ranger #15: BOOK OF THE WEEK!!!!! This issue starts off a 4 part story taking The Ranger and Tonto across America. Great story, great art-BUY THIS!!!

The Adventures of Superman by Jose Luiis Garcia Lopez-Garcia Lopez is one of my all time favorite artists. This is some of his BEST work!

Miss Fury #1-Brand new Pulp title from Dynamite!

GI Joe Special Missions #2-Chuck Dixon + Paul Gulacy =BUY THIS!

Green Arrow #19-This book is SOOOO good now!!

Lone Ranger #14-GREAT Stand alone story!!

Superior Spider-Man #7-Spidey's got some explaining to do-TO THE AVENGERS!!!!!

What you should buy....3/6/2013

Some good stuff out this week!! Marvel's next big event starts, and lots of other fun stuff. Let's get to it!!

Bionic Man #17: Another fun issue!! The new writer and artist are really coming into their own on this book. Pick it up!!

Age of Ultron #1: It's Ultron vs everyone in the Marvel universe! And it looks like he's all ready won!!

Superman Family Adventures #10: I love this book so much. And so should you.

All New X-Men #8: Not as good as the previous issues, but still a lot of fun.

GI Joe: A Real American Hero #188: Larry Hama + GI Joe = AWESOME!!!!

Green Arrow #18: The new creative team is FANTASTIC!!! READ THIS BOOK!!!

Superior Spider-Man #5: Uh-oh. Doc Ock's dickisness is REALLY starting to show!!

Helheim #1: OK, I'll be honest, this is probably something that I wouldn't read. BUT, my good friends Patrick & Dal over at Challengers Comics are SO behind this book, I have to say, give it a chance!!

What I thought of...All New X-Men #8

I hate to sound like a dead horse, but I am SO not an X-Men guy. Until this book came along, that is. I admit, I expected a lot of people to bail after Immonen left the book, but that's not really happening. Sure, Bendis is writing it, but the premise is, from a distance, a little hokey. The 5 teenage X-Men come to the future to straighten out what Cyclops did wrong? Yeah.....right.

The Good: It's the X-Men teaming up with the Avengers!!!...kinda. Young Angel goes off looking for himself, litterally, and both Angels stumble upon an attack on Avengers Tower by the bad guys of Hydra. Except, the Avengers aren't exactly AT HOME, so it's an all Angel vs Hydra fight. Until the Avengers DO come home and then the X-Men get a stern "talking to" by Captain America. This issue works in several different ways. The "young version" meets "old version" gag is still entertaining and has yet to go stale. The interaction between young Angel and Kitty Pryde is REALLY great, and there's an ending that I won't spoil, but is almost jaw-dropping. VERY well done issue.

The Bad: Of all the issues in the series so far, this one is the weakest. Even though it's entertaining, the young Angel/old Angel stuff gets pretty old pretty quick because Bendis doesn't give either one enough of a personality difference. They're basically the same person, nothings changed about the character in all these years. Angel is one of my favorite X-Men and have NO IDEA what his current stance or powers are. I'd think a nice recap page would take care of this. I mean, after all, there's like 594 X-Men books out, you can't expect everyone to know everything. 

The Verdict: I'm gonna say......buy it. But ONLY if you've bought the rest of the run and want to have a complete collection. There's really nothing in this story that NEEDS to be told, other than Bendis needed to do an Angel issue. The shock ending is good, but nothing that won't be gone over is issue #9.

Comics You Should Buy-2/6/13

A decent sized week this week. Not as big as the previous weeks, but there's still some REALLY good stuff out. Let's take a look:

GI Joe: A Real American Hero #187: I can't begin to tell you how much I love this book. 25 years after this story "ended", it's continuing and is as fun, action packed and relevant today as it was back then. Plus-NINJAS!!

Fearless Defenders #1: This series gets off to a slow-ish start, but there's some really great dialouge and some FANTASTIC art by Will Sliney. This book is only going to get better!

Earth 2 #9: Just a great, fun super hero book.

All New X-Men #7: A lot of people are less than thrilled with the art change, but, the story is still incredibly good.

Superior Spider-Man #3: Another great issue. This is the most interesting Spider-Man has been in years.

Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow #21: The end of an era for GI Joe. This wraps up the Dixon/Atkins era of GI Joe. Don't be upset, next month-a brand new fresh start!!

Green Arrow #17: BOOK OF THE WEEK!!! Brand new creative team,writer JEFF LEMIRE and artist ANDREA SORRENTINO take over this title and spin it in a brand new direction!!! If you haven't read Green Arrow before, this is the PERFECT place to jump on!!

Well, there you go. There's PLENTY of other comics out this week, but these are just a few that I think you'll really enjoy. As always, if you're in Chicago, come visit Challengers Comics and see me! Seriously, I mean it!!

The List!!!...for Wednesday, January 16th

WOW!!! What an incredible week for awesome comics!!...and, Saga's out this week too. Here's a few that I would HIGHLY recommend....

Bionic Man vs. Bionic Woman #1: Let's start things off with a bang. This first issue is FANTASTIC!!! And, while we don't quite get the battle we all want to see in this first issue, it's a great opening chapter of this mini series.

Mars Attacks The REAL Ghostbusters: Wow. I really can't believe that Sony let IDW do this. But, I'm super glad they did. It's great, buy it!

Savage Wolverine #1: Wolverine by Frank Cho. That pretty much says it all. Oh, and Shanna the She-Devil.

All-New X-Men #6: I can't WAIT to see what happens next!!!

Captain America #3: Old Cap vs. An alien from Jabba the Hutt's Palace!

Batgirl #16: Death of the Family tie-in!! Somebody's getting married!

Avengers Assembled #11: Really loving this book since the creative team shift

The Black Beetle #1: This is a FANTASTIC pulp hero action comic! Loads of fun!!!

Batman #16: Death of the Family!!!

GI Joe #21: NOT a silent issue!!! But, sadly, this is the end of the road for this GI Joe series. But, you can't keep a good counter terrorist unit down, right?

What a HUGE week for comics!!!! It's almost like 2 weeks combined into one, because almost NOTHING is shipping next week on the 26th(except the all ready spoiled Amazing Spider-Man #700). Anyway, here's just a FEW of the comics that I recommend picking up this week:

All New X-Men #4-I never imagined in a million years that this book would be as good as it has been.

Bionic Woman #6-THIS BOOK IS WAY BETTER THAN IT SHOULD BE!!!!

Avengers #2-A whole shit ton of people show up!!!! And it's awesome!!!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe #5-He-Man VERSUS Battle Cat!!!!!

Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow #20-THINGS ARE HEATING UP as the series is winding down!!

MacGyver: The Fugitive Gauntlet #3-I love this series so much!!!Buy it. Read it. Repeat. 

-There you have it!! Again, LOTS of great stuff to buy this week and isn't it a perfect time to buy a pile of comics and read them? A lot of you will be traveling, and that's the perfect time to read and not have to make awkward conversation with the weird person next to you!
