What I thought of...Nova #5

Nova #5: Sam has The Ultimate Nullifier and has ZERO clue on how to use it. He's being chased by an old friend of his father's and there's an alien armada ready to attack Earth. Just another, ordinary, average day.
The Good: Loeb & McGuinness have created the BEST all ages book that's not for kids. Seriously, Marvel could have slapped an "all ages" stamp on this and, while it wouldn't have sold nearly as well, it would make a great kids book. This is a book that I would've LOVED when I was about 8 or 10 years old. Well, those days are long passed, but you know what? I still love the hell out of this book! I think the best word to describe it "charming",
The Bad: NONE!!! Nope, not a thing. There's really not one thing about this comic that I didn't like. I love Ed McGuinness' art, he draws everything like it's an old Masters of the Universe toy.
The Verdict: Grab TWO copies!!! One for yourself, and one to give to someone who's younger than you. You'll BOTH be thankful that you did. Highest recommendation possible!!

What I thought of...Nova #2

So far, this book is 2 for 2 in the awesome department. I really never thought I'd like this book this much, but the creative team makes it really easy to love!!!
The Good: There's a lot. I know a lot of people don't care for Jeph Loeb, but he makes this book SO much fun!!! Yes, there are all the standard "new hero discovering his powers" cliches in this issue, but Loeb manages to make them fresh, different and a lot of fun. Add to that Ed McGuinnes, and you've got an action packed, old school comic that reads great for modern day audiences. This book doesn't pretend to be anything it's not. It's just a fun, super hero comic, plain and simple.
The Bad: Hmmmmmm. Let's see. I'm still not digging the "deadbeat dad" story line, but thankfully it's not as prominent here as it was in the last issue. Also, this is a SUPER quick read, I wish there would've been a little more dialogue.
The Verdict: Pick it up!!! If you liked the first issue, it's pretty much more of the same, and that's a GOOD thing!!

What I thought of......Nova #1

There were, surprisingly to me, a lot of things that I like about Nova #1. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Rich Rider guy. Completely and totally, so I was a little bit biased against this book going in. But, Jeph Loeb won me over pretty quickly. First, this is a book I would've LOVED when I was 12 years old. Strangely, I found myself loving it now that I'm....not 12 years old.
The Good: I'm a huge Ed McGuinness fan. Anyone who draws everyone like they just stepped out of a Masters of the Universe cartoon is OK by me. The story is fun, nothing to serious or life changing. Just a really fun, entertaining super hero origin story. There's some great flashback sequences to SPOILER ALERT!! Sam's father and his days in the Nova Corps END SPOILER!! that are were most of the action in the book come from.
The Bad: Another "deadbeat dad" story. Kind of.  The reader knows that Sam's dad is a true blue hero, but none of the characters in the book do, so they beat up on Sam's dad ENDLESSLY. It gets a little tiring after awhile, but it's nothing that will take you out of the book, and it's an essential part of the story.
The Verdict: Grab it!! It's a good, fun, entertaining super hero comic book. Very light in tone, and just a good time!
