Comics You Should Buy-2/13/13

Not a huge week this week, but there's some good stuff. Let's get to it!

Katana #1: From the pages of Birds of Prey and Justice League of America #1!!! Very interested in this take on one of my favorite Outsiders.

The Bionic Man vs The Bionic Woman #2: The first issue was PHENOMENOL!!!! Just wait until you see what happens next!

The Bionic Man #16: As long as we're on the subject of bionics......this book is always a great read.

Secret Avengers #1: This has my favorite line up of Avengers to date. And with Nick Spencer writing, I'm sure this is going to be really good!

Batman #17: Death of the Family concludes!!!! Snyder & Capullo's run has been amazing, and this issue is no exception. This issue is NOT TO BE MISSED!!!

What I thought of ...Star Wars #2

Last month, Star Wars #1 was honestly my favorite Star Wars comic since the Marvel Comics series, way back in the 70's and 80's. So, I went into this with great excitement. Let's just say, it didn't disappoint at all.
THE GOOD: All of it. Seriously. Writer Brian Wood manages to cram this issue with just about EVERY  Star Wars character that he can, but nothing ever seems forced or crowded, or needlessly thrown in the story. If you read last issue, you know that Princess Leia has been assigned to find a traitor in midst of the Rebellion. This issue, the suspects are introduced and let the mystery solving begin!! Also...HAN & CHEWIE!!!!! How awesome is that?
THE BAD: Ummmmm.....nothing. OK, if I HAD to pick something, I'd say that judging by the cover, I was looking forward to seeing Boba Fett in this issues, but he's technically not. So, that was a bummer. But yeah, that's the only thing that I can come up with. Oh wait, there's a reference to the prequels. Didn't need that.
THE VERDICT: BUY THE HELL OUT OF THIS ISSUE!!! It's great, it's CLASSIC Star Wars, and it's just a damn good comic book. It WILL have you on the edge of your seat waiting until next month, but hey, that's what comics are for!!

What I thought of....Uncanny X-Men #1

I've made no secret about this fact, I've never been an "X-Men" guy. I like The Wolverine, and I LOVE The Beast, but other than that.......I can take or leave them. My favorite X-Men title ever was the original X-Factor, which features the original X-Men as mutant-hunting government agents. Anyway, enough about that. Let's take a look at Uncanny X-Men #1:

The Good: In a REALLY round about way, this IS a tiny bit like the old X-Factor book I was talking about earlier. Cyclops and his band of mutants go around gathering up the brand new mutants that are popping up everywhere. Mostly, this issues takes place inside a SHIELD holding cell where a mystery man in talking to Maria Hill. It's written by Bendis, so it has an advantage when it comes to the talking head department. I have to say, more than any comic that I've read in a long time this book is not only entertaining, but INFORMATIVE.
The Bad: There's not that much wrong with this comic. If I had to get picky, I'd say that Bachalo's art on the action scenes are a little muddled and hard to follow. Also, the book has an interesting premise, but it's gonna have to do some pretty amazing things to make me keep up with it. It's a good premise, but it has the potential to get REALLY old REALLY fast.
The Verdict: It's a good first issue with some nice revelations and surprises. Whether it can keep it up or not will be something to watch for.

Comics You Should Buy-2/6/13

A decent sized week this week. Not as big as the previous weeks, but there's still some REALLY good stuff out. Let's take a look:

GI Joe: A Real American Hero #187: I can't begin to tell you how much I love this book. 25 years after this story "ended", it's continuing and is as fun, action packed and relevant today as it was back then. Plus-NINJAS!!

Fearless Defenders #1: This series gets off to a slow-ish start, but there's some really great dialouge and some FANTASTIC art by Will Sliney. This book is only going to get better!

Earth 2 #9: Just a great, fun super hero book.

All New X-Men #7: A lot of people are less than thrilled with the art change, but, the story is still incredibly good.

Superior Spider-Man #3: Another great issue. This is the most interesting Spider-Man has been in years.

Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow #21: The end of an era for GI Joe. This wraps up the Dixon/Atkins era of GI Joe. Don't be upset, next month-a brand new fresh start!!

Green Arrow #17: BOOK OF THE WEEK!!! Brand new creative team,writer JEFF LEMIRE and artist ANDREA SORRENTINO take over this title and spin it in a brand new direction!!! If you haven't read Green Arrow before, this is the PERFECT place to jump on!!

Well, there you go. There's PLENTY of other comics out this week, but these are just a few that I think you'll really enjoy. As always, if you're in Chicago, come visit Challengers Comics and see me! Seriously, I mean it!!

What I thought of....Fearless Defenders #1

This is a hard one to review. There's a lot of things that I liked, and a lot of things that I didn't like. So, I hope by the time I finish this review I'll be able to come to a conclusion on whether or not I can recommend it.
THE BAD: This whole book just kinda seems....unnecessary. I'll be honest, I haven't read much of Cullen Bunn's work before, but here the storytelling just seems a little weak. This Defenders team seems too thrown together, and, even by comic book standards very far-fetched on why these ladies would team up in the first place. There's a character twist that's thrown in that's meant to shock us, and it would shock us......if it was 1999.
THE GOOD: While I didn't really dig the story as a whole, I have to give credit where credit is due. Cullen Bunn sure knows how to write some AWESOME dialogue!!! I'd have to say, his characterization of Misty Knight is probably my favorite portrayal of her-EVER!!! Besides her, he does a great job writing the character of Valkyrie, keeping her true to her roots, and lets a great deal of humor come out of the character.
THE ART: Will Sliney saved this book for me. It's no secret, I've been a big fan of his for awhile. And him working on MacGyver didn't hurt, either. His art in this book is some of the best I've seen him do. Bunn does give him some great action scenes to draw and he provides a HUGE variety of things for Sliney to drawn. Everything from modern day tech to ancient skeleton viking warriors. And, it doesn't hurt that Sliney knows how to draw some pretty great looking ladies.

The Verdict: I'm gonna go with my gut on this one. I'm saying-BUY IT. While this first issue didn't blow me away, I have a feeling that it's going to get pretty entertaining in the issues to come. While the story was weak, the dialogue was strong and the art was fantastic.
